Gratitude

Ed de Kreij

Gratitude a word that that is spread around. I should be grateful for the fact that I have a home, clothes, food and running water. I should be grateful that I have a loving wife and 2 beautiful daughters How come I feel guilty when I feel low and struggle too be grateful. Surely I shouldn't because I have it so much better than other people in the world.

I struggle with this from time to time. I have set myself the task to write 5 things I am grateful for everyday. This was easy when things were going "well", not so easy when things were not going "well". I have spent a lot of time reading and learning about mindfulness and how to find peace and happiness.

Mindfulness is something that is embraced by more and more people around the world today, than ever before. I believe the strength it has, is that it has taken the basics of Buddhism but taken out the religious aspect. I have been practicing it for well over a year now and it has benefitted me a lot. However it has also made me see some of the emotional baggage I carry.

The principles of non judgement, non reactivity and gratitude make perfect sense to me. Yet it troubles me when I catch myself again and again not living by those principles. I end up kicking myself and seeing myself as a hypocrite at times. Especially when I look at other people and listen to their troubles I feel I fully understand them and so wish I could convince them and change their lives instantly.

However I still write my gratitude everyday, even when I struggle to find some reasons. Sometimes I am grateful for noticing I can't feel a reason to be grateful. Another thing I am grateful for is that I show up and take the time to be grateful for me.

I know deep down that I am grateful for the gift of life. I am human and by no means perfect. I don;t need to be. I am beautiful and so is every single person, animal or living thing. I wish you all a merry Christmas and thank you for reading my blog
